About Allan Irwin
Mr. Irwin began club management at a very early time in his career. After graduating from the Air Force Academy, Mr. Irwin wanted to pursue his dream of flying, however, a serious skiing accident prevented him from doing so. This unfortunate incident presented him with an opportunity that would turn out to be a lifelong career in club management.
Mr. Irwin was one of 75 young officers selected to manage the Air Force Club System. After an initial training program, Mr. Irwin was placed in charge of a 2000 member club and 140 employees. Other assignments included several turnarounds, and ended in a Civil Service position [GS-12] overseeing the 36 clubs in the Air Training Command.
After leaving military and civil service, Mr. Irwin became the general manager for Newport on Lake Houston [TX]. The club was losing $1,000,000 per year and was in need of upgrading. After three years, the club was showing a profit of $500,000. Building upon his successful career with Newport on Lake Houston [TX], Mr. Irwin took over as General Manager of Walden on Lake Houston [TX]. This was the first of what would become 20 new developments that Mr. Irwin would work with. Mr. Irwin’s responsibilities at Newport on Lake Houston and Walden on Lake Houston included club operations, real estate sales, and overall community management
Mr. Irwin was then recruited to start the club operations division for the Jack Nicklaus Development Company. Mr. Irwin oversaw the development of Country Club of the South [Atlanta], Wynstone [Chicago], English Turn [New Orleans], as well as Avila [Tampa] and Rolling Hills [ Where “Caddy Shack” was filmed].
In 1990, Mr. Irwin formed Intergolf Inc. Intergolf provided consulting and management to more than 40 new and existing projects. [See complete list under CLIENTS].
In 1998, Mr. Irwin was recruited by Toll Brothers to develop a club and golf operations division. Starting with one existing club, Mr. Irwin oversaw the growth of the division to 12 golf and country club projects. Mr. Irwin’s responsibilities included assisting senior management with community concept development, and overseeing the construction, pre-opening and management of each of the new clubs. These included Belmont CC [VA], Dominion Valley CC [VA], Brier Creek CC [NC], Mizner CC [FL], Frenchman’s Reserve [FL], Naples Lakes [FL], Northville Hills [MI], Moorpark [CA] and Hampton Hall [Hilton Head].
In 2003, Mr. Irwin resumed his role as principal with Intergolf.
In 2004, Mr. Irwin took on an assignment as the interim Vice President for Old Kinderhook, a planned 1100 unit, gated, golf [Tom Weiskopf, 4 ½ stars] and marina community on the Lake of the Ozarks, MO. Mr. Irwin was responsible for preparation of the 2005 business plan, real estate sales, new home and re-sale property sales, marketing, development of new plats, POA/HOA, club/marina operations and overall project management and administration. Working with the existing staff, Mr. Irwin oversaw the creation of new marketing and sales programs for real estate and amenities; assisted in the development of a plan to upgrade facilities after several years of deferred maintenance; prepared interim operating budgets and a 90 day critical path program.
Other assignments include business development work for Private Club Associates and Raspberry Falls Golf Management, as well as consulting work for Palmetto Hall Plantation Club, Hilton Head; Olde Towne, Raleigh, NC; Wilderness Trail, Banner Elk, NC; The Coves, Lenoir NC; Dominion Club, Richmond VA; and Bear Lake Reserve, NC.
Mr. Irwin has an MBA from Webster University, is a Certified Club Manager, a real estate broker [VA, NC, SC], and an Eagle Scout. He and is wife, Suka, reside in Ashburn VA. |
